I can remember as a kid the excitement building for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh back in 1986. This massive global event has had its issues over the years – the 2010 Delhi Games were a lowpoint – but Glasgow 2014 was brilliant too.
The next host of the second largest multi-nation multi-sport event anywhere on the planet is the Gold Coast in Australia. Many people would struggle to put the Gold Coast on a map, let alone know it is a city. So I set out recently for a trip to the Gold Coast to look at how this Queensland hub is building up to the massive event in spring 2018.
I’m proud to report as a Scot that they have been working closely with Glasgow to build their own success. Also impressive is that the Gold Coast is really using the Commonwealth Games 2018 to really put itself not just on the sporting map, but also on the international tourist map.
