Who is not a fan of a railway trip? There is something about catching the train somewhere that no other mode of transport for me than come close to. It’s the sheer romance, the epic promise of both the journey and the destination. What’s not to like?
I’ve visited over 100 countries as a travel writer and hand on tartan heart I can say that Scotland is the number destination in the world for me for railway journeys. The West Highland Line and the Skye Railway are both mind-blowing and there are many others too. Even the journeys between our cities are dramatic, with the main Edinburgh-Glasgow line a fine piece of railway engineering.
I’ve been asked by Scotrail to do a few blogs on travelling around by train, which was a bit of a busman’s holiday if you pardon the pun! I’d like to share some of them now and hopefully help inspire you to let the train take the strain and enjoy a wee rail break of your own. Happy travels!
