It can be hard planning a trip to Scotland with so many options around this vast, sprawling country. We’re talking over 10% of Europe’s coastline and almost half the land mass of England. So I love initiatives like The Coig, which are designed to help people get around areas discovering all the great things to see and do. What it is very special about The Coig is that the five routes (Coig is Gaelic for five) is that they are conjured up to appeal to everyone, whether you are a first time visitor from New York, know Scotland really well, or even live here.
The five routes are focused around the west of Scotland, snaking their tentacles around both the regions of Ayrshire and Arran, and Argyll and Bute. There are myriad islands to explore as well as swathes of the mainland too. The regions are The Shire, The Shiel, The Arran, The Bute and The Cumbrae.
I know all of the five Coigs well, but the whole point of them is they are not journeys to be rushed, more routes that help you delve into the rich roots of these vibrant destinations. The people behind it asked me to check them out for myself, which I jumped it to get back to these great places. I also quickly realised I’d be both informing people about them, but also learning much more myself. You can read blogs on my travels around The Coig routes through the links below. Happy travels!
